Delhi is traditionally linked to colonial beauty, the era of Mughals, food trucks, and of course, traffic. But if you have gone through the obvious options such as Red Fort, Qutub Minar, and Humayun’s Tomb, there are more to explore. Here are some of the crazy and unexpected things to do in Delhi that most people are not aware of.

1. Discover Delhi’s Ancient History

Delhi’s history dates even before the Mughal and Rajput dynasties that are normally associated with it. For a glance at the history dating back into antiquity one will be able to visit Purana Qila. This fort of the 14th century is set at the place which was inhabited by people even in the prehistoric times. Archaeologically, 1950s’-era findings showed that Delhi was already inhabited from as early as 1000 BC. Close by, one can visit Ashokan Pillars of 300 BC site placed in Feroz Shah Kotla and Greater Kailash etc. This debacle can be easily explored in the small museum that is situated at the Purana Qila.

2. Wander Through Mehrauli

Mehrauli is more offbeat than Old Delhi, so, if you loved the latter, you definitely will love the former. This area is older than Old Delhi and is loaded with history and monuments. However, what is famous today as the Qutub Minar complex, is only a part of Mehrauli, which is more like an urban village itself with many historical landmarks in the area. Others are Dilawar Khan’s Zafar Mahal, Moradabad’s Jahaz Mahal, and Gandhak-ki-Baoli, which lie hidden in lanes and bylanes. Such monuments are usually situated between or behind new buildings – it is interesting to find them. More information available at extensive articles on Mehrauli.

3. Sufi shrines that are located beyond Nizamuddin need to be visited.

The dargah of Nizamuddin Aulia is particularly called the city of Sufis however; there are lots more shrines that are Sufi and are located in Delhi. The Dargah of Bakhtiyar Kaki located in Mehrauli is the oldest Sufi shrine of Delhi. They can also listen to the Sufi music, best visited on Thursday evening. Other famous shrines include Ashiq Allah Dargah in the forest region of Mehrauli and Chiragh Dilli in the vicinity of Greater Kailash. The history of each of these sites and myths is different and non similar.

4. Visit Tughlaqabad and Jahanpanah

Jahanpanah which was constructed in the 14th century by Muhammad bin Tughlaq has a number of constructions and structures that can still be seen in areas of modern Delhi like Malviya Nagar and Begumpur. You should look for Lal Gumbad, Begumpur Masjid and Bijay Mandal. South of the above area, Tughlaqabad, another colossal work of the same period, is relatively more famous. If you are visiting this place, it would be beneficial for you to also visit the Adilabad Fort that is close to this place.

5. Tours to the 1857 Mutiny Sites

If you are a history lover and especially like to learn about the 1857 Mutiny which was the signature flight toward British domination in India, go for the Kashmiri Gate area. This site has indentations that were made by bullets during the mutiny on the gate and walls. The uprising dead soldiers are listed at the Mutiny Memorial. Khooni Jheel and Khooni Darwaza are a must visit for setting one’s eyes on and understanding why such a gruesome mantel was bestowed upon them. Other important historical sites include the Coronation Park which was used to depose the last Mughal emperor.

6. Spot Nilgais in Delhi

The Nilgai commonly referred to as the Blue Bull is a large antelope that inhabits the Indian subcontinent. However, these animals have not made Delhi a place to avoid their presence due to some level of urbanization. You might observe them in the southern areas of the town, around Jawaharlal Nehru University, Sanjay Van, or Tughlaqabad Fort. Most of them are always on the lookout for food, and this gives a wild feel to the city.

7. Explore Delhi’s Reserved Forests

Delhi has a reserved forest which provides a relief from the vibrant city life. Thus, one finds the area of Mehrauli having the Sanjay Van as one of the last formally laid out as a garden, but it has the glorious historical complex of the old Rajput city Qila Rai Pithora incorporated within it. Near Chanakyapuri there is the central ridge which has the legendary Malcha Mahal which is considered as a haunted place and the relatively tranquil Moinuddin Chisti Dargah. It has colonial structures such as the Flagstaff Tower and the Khooni Jheel situated to the north of the Kamala Nehru Ridge. Another area of forest that one can visit is the Jahanpanah City Forest located in South Delhi.

8. Enjoy Delhi’s Weekly Markets

Some of the naturally occurring things that one would experience in larger cities such as Delhi are weekly markets. It is a congested mini market where almost all kinds of goods ranging from clothes to food are sold and this is usually once a week. One of the best versions of this bazaar is located near Jama Masjid in Old Delhi; the Monday market is located at Karol Bagh, Wednesday market at Govindpuri and the Thursday Market at Masjid Moth. These markets are presenting the true and lively marketplace for buying things.

9. Taste the Scary and the Mystery

New Delhi especially seems to be clustered with such mouth-watering and spine-chilling historical spots. Malcha Mahal is a Wicked Dwell that occupies a mansion in the Central Ridge from the colonial era. Yet, Sanjay Van also has its fair of old ruins and legends. Visiting these sites makes it somewhat exciting in a horror or historical kind of way.
